Margaux wins a huge Reserve Winners Bitch at the 2026 VCA NCSE in Temecula, CA under Judge Doug Johnson (Clussexx) for a Major. The following day she went Winners Bitch at the SCVC Regional Specialty for a 5 Point Major under Judge Shelley Hennessy! Her mother, Violet, won the Hunting Bitch class and went onto an AOM. Both girls were owner, breeder handled!

Right back at it!

Wiley returns to the ring after an almost a one year hiatus! At the Malibu KC on Friday, March 6th, he wins BOB/BOBOH and goes onto an OHG2. Thank you judges M. Carl Gene Liepmann for finding Wiley in a deep entry, and Connie H. Clark for the Owner Handler Placement.

On both Saturday and Sunday (March 7-8th) he was Select Dog for two more 5 Point GCH Majors towards his Silver GCH title! Thank you Lauren Portal for handling Wiley so I could stay on Fallon.

Alex was WD/BOW at the RSVC Specialty for his 1st points! In Napa, Houdini won his class 2 of 3 days, shown by Liz & Larry at the VCNC shows!

Ellie was 1st AOM with Susan and Best of Opp Puppy in Sweeps w/ me (Sat) and SB with Liz (Sun) at the VCNC Specialites in Napa! At the All Breed show on Friday, littermate Henry was RWD to the 5 Point Major.

Weller made his third ring appearance this year, and was SD/BOBOH G3 (Sat) and BOS/BOBOH G4 (Sun) at the both Specialties (he was not entered Friday).

Thursday - Henry (HRQ Going Places) was Winners Dog and Best of Opposite for 2 Points (win photo below). Ellie was not entered.
Friday - Henry was Winners Dog out of Bred By, while sister Ellie was Winners Bitch and Best of Winners for 2 Points from 12-18 Class.
Saturday - Ellie wins Winners Bitch, Best of Winners and a huge Best of Breed for a 4 Point Major to finish her title in a flash! After an unexpected emergency C-section, Yara safely delivered five beautiful puppies — one girl and four boys on 8/14/25. She is now home recovering with her little ones and already showing what an incredible, resilient “super mom” she is. We couldn’t be more proud of her!

On Saturday January 6th, 2024, Weller (15 mos. old) makes his debut as a Special at the Kennel Club of Palm Springs and takes a huge BOB/BOBOH win (entry of 45) over multiple ranked Specials. Thank you Judge Carl Gene Liepmann!

He also earned his CGC and ATT titles. On Sunday, he was awarded BOBOH but we were not able to stay for Groups.

Yara did well at the SCVC Field Trial events in California City, CA and we could not be more proud!

At the 2nd Annual GOLGD/Regional Championship on January 16-17th, Yara takes a respectable Judges Award of Merit (JAM) in a Major entry in an hour horseback stake. Thanks Kim Burnell Fowler for scouting and to Judges Aaron Fausett and David Bills. This was her first time in a walking and retrieving stake (AWGD-R) and Yara had three finds, including a perfect/textbook retrieve which earned her 4th Place (13 Starters). Thanks Judges Jeff Rhine and Sarah Hayes. Also, thanks Patrick for training Yara and getting us this far.

Beyond thrilled to see BOTH Arielle and Emery on the 2022 VCA Top Producing Dam list among such nice company!

Arielle (GCHS CH Moonlight’s Easy To Keep JH CGC TKN ATT TT) qualified two (2) years in a row(!!!) with her one and only litter (x Madsen). Fleetwood finished his CH and went BIS BBE, while Wiley, BISS Yara, and Finn each finished their GCHs; with Wiley finishing his GCH Bronze. Fleetwood and Winnie also finished their JH’s helping sire, Madsen, to a spot on the 2022 Top Producing Hunt Sire list.

Emery (GCH CH Moonlight It’s Good To Be Me RN JH CGC TKN TT) qualified with her CH’s Ripley (x Jett) and Gemma & Violet (x Yogi).

Excited to see the top three Sires were: Yogi, Madsen and Tanner whom were also bred to my girls: Emery, Arielle and Cordie! Superstar Aya (Tanner x Cordie) finished her GCH (and a bunch of other titles) in 2022 helping daddy Tanner to #3.

So very proud of Arielle and Emery and their progeny!

We are so excited to share that Yara won her first Gun Dog placement with 4th Place (18 Starters) in OGD at the Las Vegas Bird Dog Club FT in Mesquite, NV. Go Yara!

In January 2023, she started Field Trialing with Patrick Clark of All Points Birddogs . She’s made quite the impression getting around clean in multiple horseback trials, including the SCVC Desert Classic Regional Championship which is an hour-long stake, we are so proud of her!

Today Violet goes WB/BOW for 2 more points putting her in the double digits towards her CH! Thank you judge Marissa Clark. Time to share the best news! Wiley x Emery pups are on the way!

If you’ve been around Emery, you’ll know she is referred to as the “good-time girl” meaning she is up for anything and always has fun doing it. Her grandmother, and my heart dog Csilla , was similarly tempered. Wiley comes from a very successful litter which checks all the boxes for breed type and field ability. The pedigree combo for Wiley x Emery is a line-breeding on Csilla, and something I’ve always planned to do — when the time was right <wink>. I am excited to collaborate with Doug and Alisa (Wiley’s owners) who’ve been so supportive of the Moonlight breeding program and are such great friends.

Yara wins the Vizsla Club of Southern California Specialty on March 4, 2022 under Judge Dr. Steve Herman! This was her second time shown as a Special after finishing her Championship last June 2021. Yara was expertly presented by Liz Jordan-Nelson to this prestigious win defeating nearly 50 Vizslas including Top Five ranked dogs and MBIS and MBISS winners. We are so excited to have our “field trial bitch” recognized in the show ring, truly a breeder’s dream!

At the largest ever entry at the SCVC Field Trial on January 21-23rd, Yara picks up two more Derby placements!

Nineteen month old old Yara closes out her Derby career with 4th Place in both Open Derby (8 dogs 2 pts) off horseback and Amateur Walking Derby (12 dogs 2 pts) – both placements were owner handled. Thank You to judges Christi Uhrig, Mike Vaz and Dan Dalton.

Looking forward to training for broke dog stakes, so excited to see what comes next for my crazy girl!

Brothers Wiley & Fleetwood win in Costa Mesa!

Fleetwood travelled from Marin County to SoCal on December 10-12th to attend the Costa Mesa circuit. This was first time on a show lead and in the ring. He won his class every day, and took Reserve Winners Dog on Friday. He followed that up with Winners Dog for a huge 5 Point Major on Sunday! Thank you Judge Robert Hutton for your kind words on showing from the Bred By Exhibitor class, it is always nice for hard work to be recognized!

Fleetwood’s brother, Wiley, was awarded Select Dog on Friday for a 5 Point GCH Major and went onto take Best of Breed in a beautiful entry on Sunday for his second 5 Point GCH Major! He was shown in the group by Loran Morgan due to other commitments later that day.

We are so incredibly proud of these handsome littermates who turned 18-months-old over the weekend!

Rio Salado Vizsla Club – November 13th

Finn (CH Moonlight Keep the Feeling) wins his second Best Puppy in Sweepstakes under Judge Mrs. Amber Nash following in the paw-prints of his irreplaceable mother, “Arielle” who won the same Sweepstakes back in 2015.

Litter sister Nina (Moonlight Feel Good Factor) won her 12-18 Sweeps Class (over a CH).

Earlier that day, at the Canada Del Oro KC, Finn won Best of Breed and Best Owner Handler under Breeder Judge Mrs. Linda Kelly (Oakleaf Vizslas). He later went onto an OH Group 2 under Judge Mrs. Jane Trieber.

On Sunday, November 14th, Finn won Select Dog for his second 5 Point Grand Championship Major under Judge Gordon William Hayburn. Finn will be shown sparingly towards his GCH as time and resources allow.

On Saturday October 23rd, Aya qualified in the morning at a Barn Hunt Senior Trial, placing First. After that, she went to the Scent Work Club at the San Gabriel foothills where she successfully qualified in all her Advanced runs to obtain the individual titles and the overall Scent Work Advanced Title: SWA!

Then in the afternoon, she went back to the Silver Rose Ranch to run the afternoon Barn Hunt trial with another First place and completing the Barn Hunt Senior Level: RATS!

On Sunday, October 24th, Aya completed her Scent Work Handler Discrimination / Novice title: SHDN!

Yara and Wiley earned their JH titles in 4⃣ straight passes with high scores (9-10’s) at the Double Double HT at the Bracco Club of America and Sporting Dog Assoc. of AZ. We had wind gusts of 30 MPH, but these pups never quit hunting!

These titles earned my AKC “Silver Level” Breeder of Merit — which requires a breeder to have 25 dogs with AKC titles. Thank You to all the Moonlight Vizsla owners who’ve helped reach this milestone, looking forward to future successes!

“Axel” had a fantastic weekend in Chandler, AZ at the Fiesta Dog Shows.

On Saturday November 21st he was Winners Dog, Best of Winners, Best Owner Handler and took a very nice Owner Handler Group Four! The next day he finishes with huge win going Winners Dog, Best of Winners, Best Owner Handler and Best of Opposite Sex over five ranked male Specials for his fourth Major win to earn his Championship! Thank you judges Mrs. Barbara Shaw and Mr. Ken Murray for recognizing Axel.

Axel was shown a handful of weekends and took some very nice wins, including two 5 Point Specialty Majors and a Best of Winners Major at the prestigious Palm Springs Kennel Club and his final Major defeating several BISS and ranked male Specials. We are so excited about this boy’s future!

Axel is the first Champion for both his sire and dam, and my 10th Bred By Exhibitor Champion. Axel will work on his Grand Championship as well as focus on his bird training in 2021!

Sharing a post from Debra Evalds at New Hope Vizsla Rescue (PA):

THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE LOOKING FOR A VIZSLA PUPPY!

Please read to the end. Breeders, please read too. I have had Vizslas since the 90’s and they were rare then. Popularity grew over time, but 2020 is the year demand exploded. Here are the facts…I tried to be kind, but straightforward. Please read and consider:

1) If you have only done online research and haven’t owned a high energy sporting dog, stop and wait . Delay until after COVID. Wait until you can network with good breeders. Vizslas are absolutely not what they are portrayed as in Runner’s World or many breed info descriptions. They are a lot and expect a lot from you, way beyond exercise. They also shed, are not hypoallergenic, can be nervous & not love kids. Not all Vizslas are the same.

2) There are not enough dogs from reputable breeders to go around. There is too much demand and there are many people looking who have had Vizslas, are super owners, live in single family homes with nice fenced yards. They may even have dogs from the breeder. A breeder will select the home they feel is best for their puppy because they love them a lot. So, if you live in an apartment in the city, have no dog experience, don’t want to spend money for a fence or can’t have one, have a few children under 5 that will take your energy and attention away from the puppy, haven’t met Vizslas in person, or work long hours, is a reputable breeder going to choose you over the experienced owner?

3) So, as a post earlier this week pointed out, this could drive people to backyard breeders, puppy mills, pet stores, and anyone willing to sell them a puppy. Please, don’t do it. I do rescue. I have 3 dogs from bad breeders I am trying to help. All are under 5, but 2 have bite history and resource guarding, and the other likely has epilepsy. That is what you can end up when you work with a breeder that does not research pedigrees, do health testing, and breed for a lovely combination of health, temperament, conformation, and ability. Look for a breeder that strives for all 4. They may not always achieve that, but they should be there for you if you have a problem with your dog. You don’t want to buy a puppy and find out in a few months it has a congenital defect that will cause a short life or cost you exorbitant amounts of money. You don’t want to be that person sharing a Go Fund Me on Facebook because the breeder won’t help and you can’t afford medical bills. You really do not want to be calling rescue in a few years because your Vizsla bit your child in the face (I don’t want that call either). If people stop buying from shaky breeders, neither of us will be on that phone call because they won’t breed if they can’t sell their puppies.

4) As much as you want a Vizsla, there may not be one out there for you unless you are a home that is a good match for the breed, and you have great patience, dedication to working with a good breeder, and are willing to wait. Read that again . Find a breeder through your local Vizsla club who you can connect with and get on their list. Cultivate a friendship and keep in touch. Ask if you can visit puppies from next litter, even though they likely have puppies all spoken for. At this point, it could be a year or two for many good breeders, but it is worth the wait. (read the pinned announcement and the files in group to learn what a good breeder is.) The alternative is to settle for someone who always has puppies or has puppies because smart buyers know they aren’t cutting the mustard with health testing or have other red flags (see point 3 above). The last option is widening your search and considering other breeds. There are other wonderful breeds that may not be in so much demand. There also are dogs in need at rescues and shelters. There are many fabulous mixed-breed dogs or “All-American” dogs that need homes. Explore different options in addition to looking for a Vizsla.

5) Reiterating above points, but Vizslas are in demand. Reputable breeders are overwhelmed. They are getting many inquiries and are probably not going to be fast to respond if they don’t have puppies planned or have a full wait list. Be patient, kind, and persistent if you really like that breeder’s dogs. Many of us are spending many hours a day replying to emails from people looking for puppies. Also, take the time to tell about yourself (location, experience, family, home, why you want a Vizsla) instead of just writing “Do you have available puppies?”. You are likely to get responses that are equal to the time you are putting in to your questions.

6) Rescues don’t have puppies, but they can help you avoid bad breeders. In rescue we get so many inquiries. In the rare chance we get a puppy, we are likely going to place locally with someone we know, as the puppy isn’t at the age to be spayed or neutered yet. We do respond to people seeking puppies because we want them to find good breeders. I respond to them before applicants because I may be able to stop people from getting dogs from the breeders that keep me busy in rescue! Personally, I send at least 20 emails every week. I will also tell someone the truth if they ask me about a breeder, based on my knowledge and personal experiences with the breeder. We want to steer you toward breeders who take their dogs back if there is an issue. Trust me on that one!

7) Last, this is for the reputable breeders in this group. Please share with your friends that are reputable breeders. We need to educate people looking for puppies. If they aren’t a good match tell them, and tell them why. Create a referral letter and send it to help people or chat with them if that is your style. Let’s just all give back a bit to help the breed, help each other, help these people who are looking, and help the poor mama Vizslas who are sitting in cages being kept only to be bred by greedy people that love money more than dogs. Help stop the supply and redirect from the bad breeders. The good ones all know who to tell people to steer clear of. Let’s help people by speaking freely and sharing accurate and truthful info.

What is Puppy Culture and why do we use it?

So many people ask us for a good written explanation of the Puppy Culture program that they can pass on to others. This is something I have grappled with a lot lately as we are re-doing our website and I think we really need a true explanation of the program. I’m going to throw out some things but it’s still fairly “free form” so bear with me.

On the top level, Puppy Culture is a socialization and training program specifically developed for puppies from birth through the end of their critical socialization period, with age appropriate protocols and lessons laid out in an organized format. The program consists of videos, books and a Workbook that can be found on our website: http://shoppuppyculture.com But that really does not get to the “why” of Puppy Culture, or what makes it different.

Puppy Culture is based on the premise that the puppy always leads the learning, and puppies learn best by appropriate experiences at the appropriate time. So what we are doing is teaching you to observe the puppy, and, based on the behavioral markers you see, serve the puppy the experience or lesson that is optimal for him at that moment in time.

By letting the puppy lead, we are:

•maximizing the benefit of any given protocol or lesson,

•minimizing any danger of overfacing or scaring the puppy

•creating confidence and self-efficacy by presenting the appropriate level of challenge that the puppy CAN do without failing or presenting a danger to himself.

Finally, we teach owners to enjoy each puppy for the precious individual he is, and to tease out the best qualities in that puppy, rather than holding the puppy up to an arbitrary yardstick and labeling him as a problem if he does not measure up.

Many puppies are labeled as having behavior or temperament issues when they are simply being served an inappropriate experience for their developmental age. This can hobble the puppy for the rest of his life with an unjust label that will cause people to treat him in an unthoughtful manner. By letting the puppy lead, you avoid this and enjoy your puppy for the wonderful individual that he is.

So you watch the puppy and see what learning experience he’s ready for. And learning what those experiences are and how to effectively serve them is a big part of the Puppy Culture program.

Why is this so important? Because things that are perfect in one developmental period could be useless or even detrimental in the next, and vice versa. So we teach you to know where you puppy is developmentally, and what to do right now.

Yes, Puppy Culture is a “positive,” reinforcement-based program and we do not use corrections or outmoded dominance theory, but that is really all a by product of observing the puppy and serving him the learning experience he is asking for.

And I will add that our program is based on the latest science and studies on puppy and animal rearing, and we include many experts and authors in the film to further explain the logic of the program.

Still working on all this but these are my current, somewhat unorganized, thoughts.
